For an effective prayer life, we need to further understand the dynamics of our relationship with God as our Father, especially, who we are, as His children.
- We are more than mere children; we have ALL been made sons of God. This is not according to race, status or gender. We are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. We all have an equal status with the Father, irrespective of our ethnicity and race, gender and social status.
Galatians 3:26-28 NKJV
“[26] For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. [27] For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. [28] There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither MALE nor FEMALE; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”
- We have been given the blessings of the heavenly realms.
Ephesians 1:3 NKJV
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ…”
- We have been adopted, forgiven, accepted, made blameless, given an inheritance, sealed with the Holy Spirit, etc. We have been given the status of sons, and God is our Father.
- As sons of God, we have been raised and seated in Christ, far above principality and power.
Ephesians 2:4-6 tells us that, though we were dead in sin, because of His great love for us, God who is rich in mercy, has made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, thus giving us access to the Father.
- As sons of God, we have access to the Father.
John 16:23-24 NLT
“23 At that time you won’t need to ask me for anything. I tell you the truth, you will ask the Father directly, and he will grant your request because you use my name. 24 You haven’t done this before. Ask, using my name, and you will receive, and you will have abundant joy.
Jesus also said, “I give you the keys to the gates of heaven – that is access to the Father! We can come to Him in prayer.
- We have been given authority and have access to God’s power.
Actually, Paul prayed that we would grow to know the exceeding greatness of the power of God which is at work in us. This power of God, the Holy Spirit, is at work in us to enable and empower us to operate as sons of God on the earth.
The Example Of Jesus
Jesus knew who He was as His Father’s Son, and stayed close to His Father by spending much time in prayer; sometimes all night, just talking to His Father. Although no one knows what they actually talked about, we have a hint from the authority with which He spoke and some of the things He did afterwards.
John 5:19-20 ESV
“19 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And greater works than these will he show him, so that you may marvel.”
- At Lazarus’ grave, Jesus looked up and said, “Father, I know that you always hear me…” (John 11:41-24)
- Truly, our prayer life would certainly take on new meaning and become more effective and dynamic, if we understand who God is, as our Father, and who we are on this earth, as sons of God. May the Holy Spirit grant us insight into our identity and status as sons of God, and give us boldness as we approach God in prayer. Amen!
