6. ADONAI
Adonai is the plural form of “Adon,” which means “lord;” Adonai means “my Lords” and represents plurality of majesty. Adonai portrays God as master, ruler and sovereign over all things, especially, our lives.
Deuteronomy 10:17-18 NLT
“[17] For the LORD (Yahweh) your God (Elohim) is the God (Elohim) of gods and Lord (ADONAI) of lords. He is the great God, the mighty and awesome God, who shows no partiality and cannot be bribed. [18] He ensures that orphans and widows receive justice. He shows love to the foreigners living among you and gives them food and clothing.”
The Hebrew name Adonai is translated in English as “Lord,” (with just a capital ‘L”) to distinguish it from Yahweh, which is translated as “LORD,” (all capital letters).
Exodus 4:10 NASBS
“Then Moses said to the LORD, “Please, Lord, I have never been eloquent, neither recently nor in time past, nor since You have spoken to Your servant; for I am slow of speech and slow of tongue.””
Psalm 136:3 NKJV
“Oh, give thanks to the Lord of lords! For His mercy endures forever.”
The Lord, Adonai, is sovereign and has absolute control over the affairs of the earth and our lives and circumstances. If only we could trust Him to fulfil His plans on our behalves, our lives would be less stressful and more restful.
JESUS CHRIST
“Lord” is one my favourite names for God (second to “Father”). I love calling Him Lord, because it is without doubt that Jesus Christ the Son of God, and my Saviour, is Lord!
Philippians 2:9-11 NLT
“[9] Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names, [10] that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, [11] and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
The Greek word for Lord is ‘kurios,’ which means, “he to whom a person or thing belongs and who has the deciding power concerning that person or thing. “Kurios” also means owner, possessor and disposer of a thing; master – one who has control of a person or thing; a ruler or sovereign.
This means that, as Lord, Jesus Christ is the possessor, ruler, master, sovereign and potentate over our lives. As Lord, Jesus Christ, has the power and authority of ownership, to bring forth and establish His Kingdom in our lives and on the earth. This was why He taught us to pray, “Your Kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”
As Lord, the jurisdiction of Jesus Christ covers the entire earth. This was also why He declared that all authority has been given to Him in heaven and on the earth, and mandated us to go forth and proclaim the Gospel to all nations of the earth Jesus Christ is Lord of Lords, master, ruler and sovereign King over all things!
Revelation 19:16 NKJV
“And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.”
The revelation of Jesus Christ as Lord brought a paradigm shift in my knowledge and understanding of the sovereignty of our God. It increased my confidence in Him and in His ability to save, protect and deliver me from all evil, establish righteousness on my behalf and give me peace and joy. YES, HE IS OUR ADONAI!!!
