BUILDING TRUST IN THE LORD (14):
The Character Of God (8)

To trust God is to have complete assurance and certitude regarding His character, ability, strength and truth. Let’s take a look at another component of God’s character.

6. GOD IS RIGHTEOUS AND JUST

Throughout the scriptures, God is described as righteous and just. God Himself stated that His justice and righteousness bring Him great pleasure! (Jeremiah 9:24)

    Deuteronomy 32:4 NASBS
“The Rock! His work is perfect, for all His ways are just; a God of faithfulness and without injustice, righteous and upright is He.”

    Psalm 145:17 NKJV
“The LORD is righteous in all His ways, gracious in all His works.”

The Hebrew words for just (mish-pawt) and righteous (tsad-deek) are almost interchangeable in their meaning. To be just is to be honourable and fair in one’s dealings and actions, and consistent with what is lawful and upright. To be righteous is to be morally right and justifiable.

God’s justice and righteousness are two sides of the same coin. His righteousness determines what is right and His justice deals with the decisions or judgements that ensure things are right.

Therefore, to say that God is righteous and just is to say that God is upright, honourable and fair in His determinations, decisions and dealings with humanity. He only does what is lawfully and morally right and consistent with Himself – His word, holiness and goodness. Everything that God does is righteous and just, and has integrity.

    Psalm 89:14a NKJV
“Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne….”

These essential qualities of God’s character and glory are the foundation upon which He has established His Kingdom. All the decisions that flow from His throne are righteous and just; they bring peace and joy to us, if we follow and adhere to them. If we are rebellious and reject His way of righteousness, we face His justice and judgements.

JESUS CHRIST THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD

God’s justice ensures that uses the same standards and measures in dealing with humanity; He is not partial and doesn’t show favouritism. Knowing that we are all unrighteous sinners who are incapable of doing right, even to to save ourselves; our righteous and just God established a way of righteousness for us, through His Son Jesus Christ.

    1 John 2:1 NASBS
“My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.”

Through the redemptive work of Jesus Christ, we can see and experience the righteousness and justice of God. O, for grace to trust Him more! AMEN!
