God’s names reveal His ability; they tell us what He is able and capable of doing. We continue our discussion on the major names of God in Hebrew Concept.
5. SHADDAI AND ‘ELYON
SHADDAI: The name Shaddai, which usually occurs along with El, is also used independently as a name of God, especially, in the Book of Job, where God displays His wisdom, ability and power to Job at the end. (Job 40:1-6)
The name Shaddai is commonly translated as “Almighty,” and gives a picture of one with overmastering or overpowering strength. The name emphasises God’s power to achieve all His purposes.
However, Shaddai also means, “He who is sufficient” or “The many breasted One– He who satisfies”
Exodus 6:2-3 NLT
“[2] And God said to Moses, “I am Yahweh-‘the LORD.’ [3] I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob as El-Shaddai-‘God Almighty’-but I did not reveal my name, Yahweh, to them.”
This is the name by which God was known to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and refers to God completely nourishing, satisfying, and supplying His people with all their needs as a mother would her child.
When connected to the name EL, the name portrays a God who freely gives nourishment and blessings. God, who is our sustainer and nourisher. Again in this name we see the dual nature of God as a strong and powerful, yet, tender and nurturing being.
ELYON: Literally means “Most High”
Genesis 14:18 NLT
“And Melchizedek, the king of Salem and a priest of God Most High, brought Abram some bread and wine.”
The name expresses the extreme sovereignty and majesty of God and His highest pre-eminence. When the two names El and Elyon are combined, it can be translated as “the most exalted God.”
Psalm 57:2-3 NKJV
“[2] I will cry out to God Most High (EL ELYON), to God who PERFORMS all things for me. [3] He shall send from heaven and save me; He reproaches the one who would swallow me up. Selah. God shall send forth His mercy and His truth.”
Oh that we would gain revelation who our God is, and what He is able and willing to do for us! Nathaniel Bassey’s song, El Shaddai comes to mind. You may click on the link below to listen to it.
Let’s worship and bow down, and give God praise; for He is worthy of our trust. Hallelujah! Amen!
Fulfilling Our Theme For 2024: “Building The Highway And Lifting The Banner”
“And in that day, there shall be a Root of Jesse, who shall stand as a banner to the people; for the Gentiles shall seek Him…. (therefore) Go through, go through the gates! Prepare the way for the people; build up, build up the highway! Take out the stones, lift up a banner for the peoples!” [Isaiah 11:10, Isaiah 62:10]
