BUILDING TRUST IN THE LORD (4):
Defining Trust (2)

To begin our journey of learning to trust Him, the Lord had asked me to find out the meaning of “Trust.” I searched for the definition from not just the Bible, but other sources, including the dictionary and the thesaurus.

OTHER DEFINITIONS OF TRUST

The word ‘trust’ is derived from the Old Norse word ‘traust’ meaning “trust, protection, firmness”

Dictionary.com therefore, defines trust as “Reliance on the integrity, strength, ability, surety, etc., of a person or thing; confidence.” Another definition of trust is to count on or bank on somebody/something; to be sure that something will happen.

However, of all the definitions of trust that I looked at, the Holy Spirit seemed to highlight on the one by the Merriam-Webster Thesaurus, which defines trust as:

“To have complete assurance and certitude regarding the CHARACTER, ABILITY, STRENGTH and TRUTH of someone.”

This definition made sense to me! If God wanted to teach me to trust Him, then all He needed to do, according to the thesaurus, was to prove His character, ability, strength and truth to me. It was not up to me to prove Him, it was up to Him to show me who He is and whether He is trustworthy or not.

You really cannot demand trust from anyone. You must earn it, through the consistency of your character, word, actions, and deeds. Therefore, trust is a choice we make based on the confidence and assurance we have in another person.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO TRUST GOD?

In commanding us to trust God, the bible is telling us to have complete assurance, certitude, confidence, faith, belief and conviction regarding His CHARACTER, ABILITY, STRENGTH and TRUTH.

Trust, therefore, has nothing to do with how you see, think, hear or feel, but, has everything to do with who God is, what He can do, and whether we know Him well enough to have confidence in Him. It was from this point that my journey with the Lord began to get exciting, because all God needed to do now, was to reveal Himself and show me His character, ability, strength and truth.

Does God have integrity and is He consistent in who He is and in His ways? Does He have the ability to perform what He says? Is His word reliable and can He be believed? Does He have the strength, power and authority to protect and deliver? Is He willing to do all these things?

These are the questions that the Father had to help me to find answers to, in His quest to help me learn to trust Him! My excitement grew, as I eagerly waited on the Holy Spirit to show me the truth about God. May your excitement also increase as we continue on this journey of truth and revelation.

Psalm 34:8 NKJV

Fulfilling Our Theme For 2024: “Building The Highway And Lifting The Banner”

“And in that day, there shall be a Root of Jesse, who shall stand as a banner to the people; for the Gentiles shall seek Him…. (therefore) Go through, go through the gates! Prepare the way for the people; build up, build up the highway! Take out the stones, lift up a banner for the peoples!” [Isaiah 11:10, Isaiah 62:10]
