To a large extent, your ability not to get easily discouraged or to overcome discouragement quickly is parallel to your spiritual health and growth. The more you grow spiritually, the more able you are to ride the storms of life without allowing discouragement to derail you.
Jesus showed us that it is possible not be discouraged and give up; we can continually draw strength from Him to endure. Isaiah 42:4 tells us this of Jesus, the LORD’s Servant, and this should give us hope…
“He will not fail nor be discouraged, till He has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands shall wait for His law.”
This scripture is what convinced me that in Christ, we can overcome discouragement and finish our purpose and assignment in life.
Hebrews 12:3-4 NKJV
“[3] For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls. [4] You have not yet resisted to bloodshed, striving against sin.”
Hebrews 12:12-13 NKJV
“[12] Therefore strengthen the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees, [13] and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be dislocated, but rather be healed.”
Ultimately, we must find a way to strengthen ourselves and break the cycles of discouragement, otherwise, this might hinder us. However, we cannot do this without spiritual growth. Let’s look at some of the ways in which we can build ourselves for the long haul.
1. Develop Self-Encouragement As A Principle For Life
1 Samuel 30:6b NKJV
“…But David strengthened himself in the LORD his God.”
A person of principle is consistent and predictable in character and behaviour. This helps them stay in control of themself during the challenging circumstances and situations of life. A person without principles is inconsistent, unpredictable and has no control of themself during life’s challenges.
Therefore, if you develop self-encouragement as a principle and persevere in it, you will grow stronger and become more in control of your life and actions, despite the circumstances and situations.
Romans 4:18-21 NLT
“[18] Even when there was no reason for hope, Abraham kept hoping-believing that he would become the father of many nations. For God had said to him, “That’s how many descendants you will have!” [19] And Abraham’s faith did not weaken, even though, at about 100 years of age, he figured his body was as good as dead-and so was Sarah’s womb. [20] Abraham never wavered in believing God’s promise. In fact, his faith grew stronger, and in this he brought glory to God. [21] He was fully convinced that God is able to do whatever he promises.”
Make self-encouragement a life-choice. Do this by daily building yourself up in prayer, and in obeying the word of God. Continue praising and giving God thanks in all things. Have faith in God and trust Him to fulfil all His promises to you. Continue to stand firm and never quit. Amen!
Fulfilling Our Theme For 2024: “Building The Highway And Lifting The Banner”
“And in that day, there shall be a Root of Jesse, who shall stand as a banner to the people; for the Gentiles shall seek Him…. (therefore) Go through, go through the gates! Prepare the way for the people; build up, build up the highway! Take out the stones, lift up a banner for the peoples!” [Isaiah 11:10, Isaiah 62:10]
