The Whole Armour Of God (15):
The Shield Of Faith (1)

Apostle Paul described the next component of the armour of God as the Sheild of Faith…

Ephesians 6:16 ESV
“In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one.”

4. THE SHIELD OF FAITH

A shield is a moveable piece of armour; its purpose is to protect and defend the whole body. Therefore, it may be in one place at one moment, and in another place the next moment, depending on which part of the body is being attacked.

A Roman soldier’s “scutum” or shield was a very important part of his armour. It was a large door-sized shield, measuring around four feet high and two and a half feet wide, and was made of two layers of laminated wood and overlaid with animal hide, linen, and iron.

The shield covered the soldier’s whole body and gave full protection against the arrows, darts, and spears thrown by the enemy. When a fiery dart or arrow pierced the shield, it was snuffed out as it buried itself into the shield.

Having this picture clearly in mind, Paul describes our faith in God as a spiritual shield. Therefore, the shield of faith is a covering that God has provided to protect and defend every area of our lives.

    WHAT IS FAITH

    Hebrews 11:1 AMP
“Now faith is the assurance (title deed, confirmation) of things hoped for (divinely guaranteed), and the evidence of things not seen [the conviction of their reality—faith comprehends as fact what cannot be experienced by the physical senses].”

Faith is believing and standing on God’s word as our evidence, proof and assurance of the things we hope for and have not yet seen. Faith is defined as “An active confidence and assurance expressed in obedience, persistence and sacrifice.”

Faith in God gives us a guarantee upon which we can hang our hopes; it provides a ground on which we can stand and hold fast. This gives us courage to move and launch forward into the unknown.

    Romans 10:17 NASBS
“So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.”

Faith is founded on the knowledge of and belief in the information, facts and truth about God, that are revealed in His Word. Therefore, faith is built by reading and studying the word of God, and choosing to believe and act on what it says about God.

As believers, when the enemy fires darts of accusation, temptation, fear, doubt, guilt and shame at us, we must respond with words and actions of faith in God and His word. We become adept at using our faith in God as a shield, as our confidence in God and assurance in His word grows.

Fulfilling Our Theme For 2024: “Building The Highway And Lifting The Banner”

“And in that day, there shall be a Root of Jesse, who shall stand as a banner to the people; for the Gentiles shall seek Him…. (therefore) Go through, go through the gates! Prepare the way for the people; build up, build up the highway! Take out the stones, lift up a banner for the peoples!” [Isaiah 11:10, Isaiah 62:10]
