The Roman soldier’s helmet, known as the ‘galea,’ was a vital piece of protective gear that provided an excellent defense on the battlefield. We also have a helmet of salvation – the assurance that anyone who comes to true faith in Jesus Christ is saved and delivered from sin, has a relationship with God on this earth and is secure in God’s guarantee of eternal life, after death. This assurance of salvation protects our minds, hearts and lives.
IDENTIFICATION
However, the Roman soldier’s helmet also had another purpose; it served as a symbol of identification. Some Roman soldier helmets had plumes and crests to identify them and their rank and status in the military. This illustration could also have been on Paul’s mind when he included the helmet of salvation in our spiritual armour.
One of the great benefits of our salvation, is that it identifies and distinguishes us as victorious soldiers in the army of God. Therefore, if you are saved in Christ, you can proudly ‘wear’ the helmet of salvation, and identify yourself as a soldier in the Lord’s army.
As soldiers in the Lord’s army, we have been given authority by Jesus Christ over the powers and works of darkness; therefore, we are to fight with an assurance of deliverance and victory.
Matthew 16:19 NKJV
“And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”
Luke 10:18-19 NKJV
“[18] And He said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. [19] Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.”
If you are not saved, then you don’t stand a chance against the enemy’s onslaught. However, as soldiers in the Lord’s army, we are more than conquerors and have already been made triumphant in Christ.
Romans 8:37 TPT
“Yet even in the midst of all these things, we triumph over them all, for God has made us to be more than conquerors, and his demonstrated love is our glorious victory over everything!”
1 Corinthians 15:57 AMPC
“But thanks be to God, Who gives us the victory [making us conquerors] through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Our Lord Jesus Christ Himself is our salvation. We are victorious in and through Him, in this life and into eternity. Therefore, we must daily renew our minds and build up our confidence with this knowledge and assurance of our salvation, deliverance and victory, as we face the battles of life.
Psalm 27:1-3 NLT
“[1] The LORD is my light and my salvation- so why should I be afraid? The LORD is my fortress, protecting me from danger, so why should I tremble? [2] When evil people come to devour me, when my enemies and foes attack me, they will stumble and fall. [3] Though a mighty army surrounds me, my heart will not be afraid. Even if I am attacked, I will remain confident.” AMEN!!
