BUILDING TRUST IN THE LORD (8):
The Character Of God (3)

There are several components or attributes of God’s character that distinguish Him as God. These components are an essential and integral part of His Being. We shall look at seven key components/attributes of God’s character.

1. GOD IS GOOD

    Psalm 34:8 NKJV
“Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good; Blessed is the man who trusts in Him!”

The Hebrew word for good is “towb,” which means pleasant, agreeable, excellent, valuable in estimation, appropriate, becoming, benign, ethically/morally right. The word has to do with welfare, prosperity and happiness.

God does not only do good things, He is the originator and source of all goodness. Therefore, the word good is not a mere description of God’s character; it is actually, the very essence and constitution of His nature. God’s goodness is a reflection of His holiness

God is consistently GOOD; His holiness ensures that. Therefore, to say that God is good is to say that He is absolutely pure and holy. Anything less would make Him less than God. His goodness is the driving force behind all His blessings.

    Psalm 31:19 NLT
“How great is the goodness you have stored up for those who fear you. You lavish it on those who come to you for protection, blessing them before the watching world.”

    GOD’S GOODNESS IN THE CREATION

Everything God created was originally described in the bible as ‘good.’ Which means that everything God created was valuable in estimation, pleasant, appropriate and befitting, benign and morally and ethically right. All that God created was good, and for our welfare, prosperity and happiness.

Although man sinned and has corrupted the earth, God has not abandoned His creation. Actually, God has left a witness of His goodness to us, in the creation.

    Acts 14:17 NKJV
“Nevertheless He did not leave Himself without witness, in that He did good, gave us rain from heaven and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness.”

Jesus also confirmed the goodness of God when He declared Him as good!

    Matthew 19:17 NKJV
“So He said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God…”

The question is, have you ever experienced the goodness of God? Can we trust (be assured of and put our confidence in) such a God?

We need to ‘taste,’ perceive, consider and experience, that the LORD is good, and that all His plans and purposes for our lives are good (for our welfare, prosperity and happiness). If we could just pause for a moment each day and recall and count our daily blessings, we shall soon realise how good God is and has been to us. Indeed ALL of God’s plans for our lives are good, because God is GOOD!

    Jeremiah 29:11 NLT
“For I know the plans I have for you,” says the LORD. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.”

    Psalm 84:11 NASBS
“For the LORD God is a sun and shield; The LORD gives grace and glory; no good thing does He withhold from those who walk uprightly.”

“And in that day, there shall be a Root of Jesse, who shall stand as a banner to the people; for the Gentiles shall seek Him…. (therefore) Go through, go through the gates!
