The names of God reveal what He has done and what He is able to do. There are seven fundamental names of God in Hebrew concept and these reveal who He is and display His character, ability and strength. Let’s continue to look at these names, to help us get to know God better and deepen our trust in Him.
2. EL
“El” appears in Hebrew, as the ordinary name of God. It is a common name, which is sometimes also used for other gods. It means “to be strong,” “to be in front,” “to be foremost,” “to lead,” “to rule,” implying one wholeads or is a Leader
When “El” is used for the one true God, it is usually used with some appellation, epithet, or attribute attached, which describes an ability, strength or quality of His. For example:
- El ‘Elyon (Most High God),
- El Shaddai (God Almighty),
- El ‘Olam (Everlasting God or Ancient of Days)
- El Kai (Living God)
- El Ro’i (God of seeing)
- El Elohe Israel (God, the God of Israel)
- El Gibbor (Hero God).
IMMANUEL
In the Book of Isaiah, when God promised the deliverance of His people, He gave the birth of the Messiah as a prophetic sign, and declared that His name shall be “Immanuel.”
Isaiah 7:14 NASBS
“Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel.”
“Immanu” “El” means “God with us” or “with us is God.” The name reveals and demonstrates the mighty and awesome presence of God among His people, to help, save and deliver them.
Immanuel is the sign that God is with us… to protect us… to destroy the works of the enemy, and save and deliver us from him…. to fight for us and give us victory!
God did not just give a prophetic sign, He fulfilled it! At the appointed time, through the power of the Holy Spirit, the virgin Mary conceived and bore a Son and named Him, Immanuel – “God with us.”
Matthew 1:21-23 NLT
“[21] And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” [22] All of this occurred to fulfill the Lord’s message through his prophet: [23] “Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel, which means ‘God is with us.'””
God, in His mercy, came down to us, and revealed Himself in human form, in the person of His Son Jesus Christ; He is the fulfilment of the promised sign. Jesus is the tangible manifestation of God dwelling in our midst and being with us! He is God with us to save, redeem and deliver us from sin, Satan and death.
